APPLE TREESif you get frost in the winter then forget orange unless tyou grow them in containers so they can be overwintered indoors.

Depends on where you are. If you are in an area that is subtropical where an orange tree will thrive than it will be far easier to grow an orange tree because apple trees require a certain amount of chilling hours (under the freezing point) to produce blossoms and fruit. Oranges do not need any chilling at all.
APPLE TREESIf you are in an area where the winter temps go below freezing for weeks on end you will have an easy time growing an apple tree but an orange tree would die unless it is inside a heated building
Plant apples in late winter/early spring. Dig a hole that is 3x larger than the root ball. Put in 1/2 bu of compost and back fill, making sure the tree is standing straight. Keep well watered the first year. Pruning starts in year two and you should get your first apples year 5.

depends on the location of your yard -we don’t have orange trees in northern NV, but apple trees do very well. talk to your local nurseryman.
