We’ve planted a couple of apple trees in our front yard. One we grew from a seed and one we adopted from a nursery. Both have just started to grow apples in the last couple of years, but the apples are small and bitter. Why is that? Is there something special you have to do in order for the tree to grow big apples, or does it just take time? If it takes time, how long?

Just curious. We’ve been trying to do our research, but there are so many differing opinions it’s hard to know what to do to grow big healthy apples.

Thanks for your time!
to saaanen– but what IS the proper way to care for an apple tree?? t

as for what a “tree from seed” is… we grew the apple tree from a seed. as in we sprouted an apple seed, then planted it. It was grown from a fuji apple.

The second tree is a hybrid. It’s got four separate branches that they spliced onto the tree, so it grows four separate types of apples. This one is so far this year producing the biggest apples. HOWEVER, the biggest apples are only growing on one branch. There are numerous smaller apples on the other branches, but they’re small and unhealthy looking, despite that we’ve sprayed them.

We aren’t quite sure HOW to care for it. How to prune it. when to fertilize, etc. Which is why I’m asking. If anybody has any good links, I’d be grateful. We’re very much “noobs” at this and would like to learn.
hardy-rose— that was very helpful, thank you.

I’ve started having an apple (or more) a day, in part to keep the doctor away, but also because I finally found a place nearby that sells good apples fairly consistently. I was wondering what some of the health benefits are – I’ve heard that apples can help you run better, for one thing, and was wondering if that was true. Also I’ve been told they’re pretty high in fiber. What else are they good for? And which color of apples (red vs green) is better for you, from a health standpoint, or does it really matter?
