The preferred method for an apple to disperse its seeds is for the entire fruit to be eaten by an animal. Enzyme’s within the digestive tract actually breaks down the outer layer slightly of the seed allowing it to sprout when the animal relieves itself.
Using this method, apple trees are able to disperse its off-spring further away. Plus the scat provides nutrients to the seeds.
While this is the preferred method, its not the only method. The nutrients within the flesh of the apple will break down if buried and will nuture the seeds as a new tree sprouts.

That’s the way it works. The fruit serves as “bait” for an animal to come along, eat the apple and the seeds, and then excrete the seeds in its waste. Waste from an animal happens to make very good fertilizer, so it’s a ready-made place for the seed to grow. If the apple falls very close to the tree, it might have a more difficult time sprouting and surviving, because the parent tree would be shading it and using the nutrients from the soil, so the seed has a better chance of producing a new plant if the apple is eaten.
