These trees are at least 25 ft tall and in very poor condition. I would like to keep the trees but I’m not sure how to trim them. Can I cut them back to the trunk, Will the grow back? I’m told if I cut them back it will take around three years and they will produce fruit again. All I need to do is leave the trunk four to six feet tall and all will be fine. I definitely would not cut them back to the trunk. I would take about 6 to 8 ‘ off the tops and any branches that go straight up. Straight up branches denote suckers which produce no fruit any way. I would then fertilize them with a good fruit tree spikes one spike for every 3″ of trunk diameter just at the drip zone which is where the edge of the branches stick out to. Give this a shot and i am sure you will be pleased with the results. By the way it is time to prune now before the leaves and flowers start. Happy growing.

Don’t cut them off at the trunk, cut limbs that cross or limbs that look weak a U branch is stronger than a Y branch, check on the web or at your extension office for tips.

prune them back, but this is best done in the fall after they have lost their leaves.
