Gradually, this became an obsession and to cut a long story short, we bought some land and started our own orchard.

    8 feet out should give it enough room to grow. You could plant it closer if you wanted but the tree would like the full 8.
    You will want to prune the tops of the tree every dormant season. Keep the tree low at around 8 feet high. The tree will grow much taller if you don’t prune it. Also if you don’t prune the tops of the trees the low limbs will not get sun and die.
    If you want a lower tree you can do it by pruning but establish the height early.
