I have a house in Dallas. Behind my house there is a wooded area, with trees that I would estimate reach 50-60 feet. These large trees, if they decide to fall, could destroy my home.
I do not want these trees to fall, I do not wish to cut them down. I want them to flourish. My concern is that there are smaller trees that grow nearby…in some cases within a foot or two of the larger tree. These smaller trees are 10-20 feet tall. I worry that the younger tree may be depleting the resources available to the older tree.
I should also mention the canopies. Because the larger trees are also fighting for leaf space, they end up leaning to get it…leaning towards my house, in fact.
So, the question…do healthy trees require a certain amount of private space? Or are the smaller trees no big deal. And should I be concerned about trees leaning towards my home, fighting for the canopy space?

I doubt the smaller trees are all that competitive to the larger trees. I would suggest removing any vines that are growing on or near the larger trees. Over time they can seriously damage the tree. I suggest you contact your local arborist group, I provided a link down below. This is one of those let the experts look and see situations.

that is easy depends on their crowns
pine trees can be 6 meteres apart ,mangos are very wide and need at least 12 meters
coconuts 10
eucaliptus 15 or if you are growing them for poles 3 meters
if the trees are on different elevations and the crown of one fits undeneeth another they can be a lot closer together
APPLE TREESif you have a lot of mixed species small trees can be close to big ones
the avarage is 8 meters
in shade coffee plantations ,the coffee is 2 metres apart under trees 10 meters apart usually

How much space do trees need between each other?

Hello nature lover =D
First of all, your main question- I think that, different trees need different amount of space to grow. It really depends. Just look at a jungle or forest. Different sizes, differents spieces of trees have their own spreading crown and shape. Hence, it is difficult to tell you how much space do trees need between them unless you specify what trees. =)
DOn’t worry about the competition of those trees and the smaller trees. Big Trees obtaining such height had gone through a lot of stress conditions to reach to that 50-60ft. Hence, they are very adaptable to that area.
In regards to the smaller trees depleting the resources to the old tree, they will not. As mentioned from the above, those 50-60 ft trees’ roots system are widely spread out and much more established than those of 10-20ft trees. You must know this, the distance tree roots spread, it is more than its own crown.
Eg. A tree with an 8-foot branch crown spread would have a 24-foot root spread diameter.
However, refer to this site to understand this term.

I’m not sure what shape of your trees are, but that is for your info. =)
Also, these trees will not fall off so easily Unless they are infested with pests and dieback of branches. DO they? If they do, call the police to contact the park management in your country to inspect the tree. [Sorry, i don't know where your house is, i'm a asian. =) ]
FOr your info, does your area have rainy season with torrential rain and a lot of thunder strikes? If yes, do call the park management to check out those trees.
But the thing is, how far are these trees away from you? if they don’t post any hazard, just let nature grows, like what you said, Flourish and enjoy them =)
About the canopies, you can simply call the park management to trim them. Stop those trees from leaning towards the sunlight. YOu wouldn’t want to trim yourself, do you? =D
Call up the park management now!
Now, will be your final anwer.
Every living things need space and conditions to achieve its fullest and optimal growth. Give you an example, imagine you bought a plant in a small pot and you know that this plant will become a Big plant. If you didn’t change the pot in times to come, it will die, if not, stunted growth. Why? It is because the roots can on longer spread. All the roots are entangled inside the pot, called ‘root bound’. Refer to the websites below for clearer understanding.

Hence, as those trees are planted inside the soil and have that amount of soil to grow, they are doing perfectly well. But let’s say, if a tree is being confined in an area, it will have problems. Refer to the site below to know what i’m trying to say. =)

So, up till now, i hope that you do know the answer. . That, trees do need space to achieve healthy status. But other factors also plays a part too. eg:-
Amount of water
Soil microbials; earthworm, etc
Soil type; sandy, clayey,
Temperature
And many many more. So, space is one of the requirement to healthy growth rate of trees.
I hope that this lengthy answer could satisfy your appetite. . =)
