   You have to be in a climate with cold winters for good apple and pear trees.
   mine are full of green fungus on the the branches and trunk, there isnt much that will get rid of it.
   I don’t have a problem with the ants, but the birds love eating apples

   I would reccommend that you use a product called bordeaux mixture. It is a “concoction of hydrated lime and copper sulphate.” Applied to the tree while dormant, it prevents most leaf spot dieseases and fungii. It is available commercially under a few different brand names and is inexpensive. Also, do not allow fallen leaves or fruit to winter on the ground under the tree.
   As for ants, you can purchase a sticky goo that you apply to a foam wrapper around the trunk of the tree. This makes a barrier to ALL crawling insects as long as no branches touch the ground. I’m not sure what it’s called, but it should be available at any garden shop.

   You have to spray every year in the spring and trim the trees in the fall.
