I now people with apple trees in their gardens, and they only get a crop in late September, and have to eat them really quickly. I live in England, and we can still be fresh english apples here, well into the spring (after that they start coming from new zealand).

Apples can be kept fresh if they are stored at optimal conditions. Commercial suppliers keep the apples colder than most home growers can – at around 45 F. I’m not positive on this part, but I believe they may also use various gasses in the storage compartment to keep the apples from deteriorating.
